Probably the biggest misconception I have to help students overcome when they take creative writing. The first poem we read is Tony Hoagland’s “America” and I make them cut it up and rearrange it to make their own poem. Giving them a poem with the word “shit” in it helps to break down some misconceptions about what poetry should be.
